War-weary Sudan hit by deadly cholera outbreak

A deadly cholera outbreak in Sudan has killed 172 people and sickened over 2,500 in just a week, health authorities confirmed yesterday, amid growing fears that the country’s fragile health system cannot cope with the rising caseload.
Most of the infections have been reported in the capital, Khartoum, and its twin city, Omdurman.
Joyce Bakker, the Sudan coordinator for Doctors Without Borders (MSF), said the spike began in mid-May, with MSF teams treating nearly 2,000 suspected cholera cases in the past week alone.
The outbreak adds to the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, already devastated by a war that erupted more than two years ago between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Fierce street battles that began in Khartoum have since engulfed much of the country.
