​Byword Motors Boss Calls for Government Support to Upgrade Masvingo Golf Course

MASVINGO — The Managing Director of Byword Motors, Mr. Sternly Kondongwe, has issued a passionate call to government officials and tourism authorities to deliberate on upgrading the Masvingo Golf Club facility, arguing that modernizing the course is crucial to unlocking the full potential of sports tourism in the province.

​Speaking at the prize-giving awards ceremony for the Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo Golf Tournament, played at the 18-hole Masvingo Golf Club, Mr. Kondongwe emphasized that the city needs top-tier sporting infrastructure to cater to both domestic and international visitors. The high-profile event brought together local sports enthusiasts, business leaders, and key government delegates, including the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Hon. Tongai Mnangagwa, who took the ceremonial opening drive.

​Addressing delegates at the awards presentation, Mr. Kondongwe highlighted the deep emotional and economic connection his business shares with the region.

​”They call it Masvingo, but we call it home. When we are here, we feel good because we are a family. But as president for the sports club and as a sponsor, we have a lot of work to do. We need to develop this place,” said Mr. Kondongwe.

​Mr. Kondongwe noted that international tourists and business visitors coming for regional showcases like the Sanganai World Tourism Expo expect high-standard sporting facilities. He urged government leadership to collaborate with local stakeholders to assist in elevating the 18-hole venue to international championship levels.

​”As long as we want tourists to come, most of them want a good golf course,” Kondongwe noted. “It is the work of the government to make sure that this facility is playable so that when tourists come, they find standard golf. We hope you will take it up.”

​Mr. Kondongwe commended recent government infrastructure projects across the country, citing national upgrades to transport hubs such as airports and highways, but stressed that community sporting venues must also receive targeted attention to drive sports tourism.

​The tournament, co-supported by Byword Motors and Shakespeare Holdings Zimbabwe, aligns with national development strategies positioning sports tourism as an economic engine. With delegates gathering in Masvingo for the expo festivities, local business leaders argue that enhanced sporting venues will sustain tourism and commerce year-round.

​As Masvingo continues to build its profile as a premier destination, figures like Mr. Kondongwe remain confident that public-private partnerships will pave the way for world-class sports facilities in the ancient city.
