Josphat Dube and Robson Sibanda, have been sentenced to five years in prison after being caught with nearly 90 meters of stolen electrical cable.
The arrest took place on the 27th of October, when police, acting on a tip-off, intercepted the pair. A search revealed 89.25 meters of 7/12 stay/guy wire, weighing 16 kilograms and valued at USD 116. When questioned, the men could not produce documentation authorizing them to possess the cables, leading to their arrest.
The duo appeared before the Hwange Magistrates Court, facing charges under the Electricity Act, which protects essential infrastructure from theft and damage.
The severe sentence reflects a hardline stance on crimes involving national infrastructure, as authorities aim to curb the rising incidents of cable theft affecting power and public safety.
