The Southern African Development Community Lawyers Association (SADCLA) has condemned the murder of Mozambican lawyer Elvino Bernado Antonio Dias, who was gunned down in a drive-by shooting in Maputo on Saturday.
Dias, a legal advisor to opposition politician Venancio Mondlane, was killed alongside Paulo Guambe, a party representative, when two gunmen fired 25 rounds into their vehicle. A woman in the car was injured but survived the attack.
SADCLA President Flavio Menete expressed concern over the killing, stating that the murder of a lawyer is an attack on the rule of law and democracy. He emphasized that legal professionals should be able to defend human rights without fear of violence.
The killing is suspected to be politically motivated, following Mozambique’s presidential elections on October 9.
