Southern African Development Community (SADC) Chairperson, President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, has called for heightened intervention efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as the security crisis continues to escalate.
Speaking at a virtual joint summit of SADC and the East African Community (EAC) yesterday, President Mnangagwa acknowledged that, despite ongoing efforts by both regional blocs, instability persists in the DRC. He highlighted the continued activities of M23 rebels, who are disrupting critical supply routes and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
The Chairperson emphasized the urgent need to accelerate and strengthen measures to neutralize the M23 rebels and restore the DRC’s sovereignty. He reiterated SADC and EAC’s commitment to peace efforts, which include both military operations and humanitarian aid to protect civilians and combat rebel forces.
