Govt Urges Farmers to Take Charge of Livestock Farming Amid Climate Challenges
Written by Staff Reporter on March 23, 2025
The government has called on farmers to take a more proactive role in managing their livestock farming businesses, particularly in the face of increasing climate challenges.
Professor Orbet Jiri, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development, made this appeal during the inaugural livestock conference held at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF), Hall 2. He clarified that the Ministry’s primary function is to facilitate and establish a supportive environment for farmers to thrive.
The livestock sector is grappling with the severe impacts of climate change, posing significant threats to food security and the overall livestock economy. Professor Jiri highlighted the government’s launch of the Livestock Growth Plan in 2021, which aims to transform the sector into a $2 billion industry by 2025.
To mitigate the effects of droughts and other climate-related issues, the government has established ward drought mitigation centers. These centers are designed to provide essential water and feed to livestock during dry periods. They will remain operational even during favorable seasons to ensure continuous preparedness for future challenges.
Furthermore, the government has initiated a comprehensive borehole drilling program to secure reliable water supplies for livestock. Alongside this, mass vaccination and deworming campaigns are being implemented to enhance livestock survival rates.
