Govt Warns Schools Against Chasing Away Learners Over Fees

The government has cautioned school authorities against denying learners access to education due to non-payment of school fees, stating that such actions infringe on children’s constitutional rights.

This warning was issued by Primary and Secondary Education Minister, Honourable Torerai Moyo, in a recent address. The engagement focused on administrative challenges, particularly the issue of unpaid school fees.

School heads expressed concern over the lack of legal authority to take action against defaulting parents and appealed for strengthened mechanisms to ensure compliance with fee payments. They also highlighted the need for more training on project implementation, especially in rural areas.

The Minister emphasized the need for parents to pay fees before the beginning of each term and warned school authorities against turning away learners or withholding examination results. Schools were also encouraged to develop income-generating projects to supplement their budgets.

Authorities were further cautioned against compelling parents to purchase uniforms exclusively from schools, a practice deemed illegal. The government urged schools to ensure competitive pricing aligned with market standards.

Meanwhile, the government is finalizing the Teachers Professional Council Bill, which aims to address issues related to job evaluation and aligning grades with qualifications and experience.
