FIFA Rejects SAFA Appeal as Zwane Ruled Out of Canada World Cup Clash

South Africa’s hopes of having influential midfielder Themba Zwane available for their crucial Round of 32 FIFA World Cup encounter against Canada have suffered a major blow after FIFA rejected an appeal by the South African Football Association, confirming the player’s three-match suspension.
The ruling means Zwane will miss Sunday’s knockout-stage fixture, depriving South Africa national football team of one of its most experienced and creative players at a pivotal stage of the tournament.
Zwane received a red card during Bafana Bafana’s opening group-stage defeat to Mexico, resulting in the disciplinary sanction that has now been upheld by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee.
SAFA had sought to have the suspension reduced, arguing that the punishment was excessive. However, FIFA dismissed the appeal and maintained the original three-match ban, leaving the South African camp with limited options ahead of the high-stakes encounter.
The decision represents a significant setback for head coach Hugo Broos, who had hoped to rely on Zwane’s vision, experience and attacking influence as South Africa pursues a place in the next round of the competition.
With the suspension confirmed, Bafana Bafana will now be forced to confront Canada without one of their key playmakers, increasing the challenge as they seek to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
