Zimbabweans Among Nationals Facing New US Visa Bonds

Written by on August 4, 2026

The United States has increased the maximum visa bond requirement to US$20 000 for eligible citizens from selected countries, including Zimbabwe, applying for business and tourist visas.

The programme applies to applicants from designated countries who are otherwise eligible for B-1 business or B-2 tourist visas, with consular officers determining whether a bond is required and the amount payable.

Affected African countries include Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, Botswana, Ethiopia, Angola, Algeria, Senegal, Tunisia, Mauritius, Lesotho, and others.

The US State Department says the policy is aimed at improving compliance with visa conditions and addressing concerns around visitors who remain in the country beyond their authorised stay.

The bond, which can be paid by the applicant or a third party, is refundable if the traveller follows the visa conditions, including departing the United States within the permitted period.
