US Woman Survives Two Lethal Doses Sparks International Debate
Written by Staff Reporter on October 2, 2026
A United States woman who has spent more than 30 years on death row has survived two lethal doses, in what has been described as an unprecedented failed execution, sparking international condemnation.
Christa Pike (50) remained alive after Tennessee officials administered two doses of pentobarbital during her attempted execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville.
Pike was later taken to hospital for medical treatment, with reports indicating that she remained alive hours after the execution attempt. Death penalty experts say there is no documented precedent of a prisoner surviving after actually receiving the drugs intended to cause death.
Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. She was 18 when the crime was committed and has spent roughly three decades awaiting execution.
The failed execution has drawn condemnation from international human rights officials, while Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has ordered an independent investigation into what went wrong and suspended the state’s remaining executions for 2026.
