Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe – With just two weeks remaining until the September 30 deadline, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is once again appealing to the public to surrender any firearms and ammunition they may have in their possession.
Despite a relatively slow start to the amnesty period, the ZRP is hopeful that more individuals will take advantage of this opportunity to contribute to a safer community.
As of September 1, only eight firearms have been surrendered nationwide.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi emphasized the importance of voluntary firearm surrender.
“We urge members of the public to seize this moment to hand over firearms and ammunition without fear of facing questioning or arrest,” he said.
“These weapons are more likely to be used for criminal purposes.”
The ZRP is also reminding licensed firearm holders to ensure their records are up-to-date and to notify authorities of any changes in their residential or business addresses.
Additionally, companies, farmers, miners, hunters, individuals, gun dealers, gun clubs, and security companies are encouraged to surrender any firearms or ammunition that they are no longer authorized to possess.
Following the conclusion of the amnesty period, the ZRP will launch a nationwide operation to apprehend individuals found in possession of illegal firearms or ammunition.
