ZLHR Condemns Eviction of People from Ancestral Lands

Written by on November 21, 2024

The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) has condemned the unlawful eviction of people from their ancestral lands, a practice that continues to impact families, particularly in rural areas.

In a statement issued yesterday, ZLHR revealed that it is working with families in Matebeleland and Manicaland, who have faced illegal evictions by miners and land developers since October 2024.

Since October, ZLHR has received 94 cases of families displaced from their homes, with appeals being lodged in the High Court under Section 74 of the 2013 Constitution, which protects the right to freedom and security of persons.

ZLHR has called for local government intervention to prevent further evictions and to protect vulnerable communities from exploitation, stressing the importance of respecting the cultural and legal significance of ancestral land.
