A game ranger from the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Authority (ZimParks) has been implicated in the shocking killing of three lions at Hwange National Park, which occurred last Monday and Tuesday.

Hali Mabuya, a 39-year-old man, allegedly used his assigned rifle to shoot the lions, whose dismembered bodies were discovered without heads and claws last week. His arrest followed suspicious behavior when he attempted to return the firearm while asking a colleague to falsify records.

He was found in possession of 52 live rounds, including ammunition for a rifle he reportedly never received.

Mabuya appeared before Hwange Magistrate Ms. Fungai Dzimbiri on Saturday, facing charges of unlawful hunting under Section 24 (1) (b) as read with Section 24 (2) of the Parks and Wildlife Act, as well as unlawful possession of ammunition without a firearm certificate, a violation of Section 4 (1) as read with Section 2 of the Firearms Act.

The case is ongoing, and Mabuya is set to appear in court again on November 1, 2024.
