The Permanent Secretary for Transport and Infrastructural Development, Engineer Joy P. Makumbe, has provided an update on the rehabilitation of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway, confirming that the project is progressing on schedule.
Following recent cabinet approval, the project has entered the documentation phase, with contractor Bitumen World set to submit a detailed project proposal. This proposal will outline the scope of work, interim arrangements, funding structures, and anticipated benefits to the government.
To facilitate a swift start, a stakeholder workshop is being organized to bring together representatives from the Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency (ZIDA), Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Transport, the contractor, and financial backers. The collaborative workshop aims to expedite the signing of the concession agreement, enabling the contractor to begin on-site work promptly.
In the meantime, provincial teams have been deployed to patch and maintain the highway, ensuring it remains navigable for road users. Engineer Makumbe emphasized the goal to complete all preparatory paperwork by year-end, allowing construction to commence early next year.
The rehabilitation of this key highway is a priority for the government, which remains committed to its timely and efficient completion. This development brings reassurance to residents, travelers, and stakeholders eagerly anticipating the highway’s upgrade.
