The Africa Road Maintenance Funds Association – Southern Africa Focal Group (ASAFG) meeting commenced today at A’Zambezi River Lodge, with representatives from nine Southern African countries in attendance. Zimbabwe’s Permanent Secretary for Transport and Infrastructural Development, Eng. Joy P. Makumbe, delivered the keynote address, calling for greater collaboration among nations, businesses, and sectors to improve road infrastructure across the region.
The three-day meeting, held from October 28 to 30, 2024, centers on the theme, “The Relationship of Road Funds and Road Agencies in the Maintenance of Roads in Southern Africa.” In her speech, Eng. Makumbe underscored the importance of this theme, referencing the 1996 SADC Protocol on Transport, Communication, and Meteorology, which commits member states to developing a robust road network that fosters socioeconomic growth.
Road funds across Southern Africa have been instrumental in providing dedicated financing for road maintenance. However, challenges persist, with some road authorities struggling to keep up with rising demand fueled by urbanization and increased vehicle traffic. Eng. Makumbe highlighted the need for enhanced regional cooperation, resource sharing, and the adoption of best practices to strengthen road maintenance efforts.
In closing, Eng. Makumbe reaffirmed the commitment to regional cooperation and strong partnerships to maintain safe, efficient road networks that support economic growth.
The ASAFG meeting brings together representatives from Zimbabwe, Lesotho, South Africa, Namibia, Madagascar, Zambia, Malawi, Angola, and Mozambique. By fostering collaboration, Southern African countries aim to ensure their road networks remain a key driver of development and prosperity.
