Zimbabwe’s Power Generation Surges After Successful Repairs
Written by Staff Reporter on May 20, 2025
Zimbabwe’s electricity supply has received a huge boost, with national power generation climbing to 1,456 megawatts (MW), a substantial increase from 989 MW reported just two days before.
The primary driver of this improvement is the Hwange Power Station, where output has nearly doubled from 545 MW to an impressive 1,015 MW. This surge follows the successful return to service of Units 1, 2, and 3, which are now contributing 212 MW and steadily increasing towards their full capacity of 260 MW each.
Unit 4 at Hwange has successfully passed all critical pressure and safety tests and is scheduled to reconnect to the national grid later today. Meanwhile, progress is being made on the repairs of Unit 6, which is anticipated to be back online by 27 May 2025.
These gains come after dedicated efforts to address the impact of acidic water damage that affected multiple boilers at Hwange on May 4th. The swift and effective interventions have clearly yielded positive results.
The Kariba Hydropower Station continues to operate reliably, contributing a steady 400 MW to the grid, while Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are adding a further 41 MW.
