Zim to Build 250 Megawatts Solar Plant to Address Power Shortages

Written by on August 15, 2024

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has announced plans to construct two 250 megawatts solar power plants to alleviate persistent power outages and augment energy supply.

The move comes as the country grapples with constant power cuts, attributed to the El Nino-induced drought that has depleted water levels at the Kariba hydro-generating plant.

According to recent data, Zimbabwe’s power generation stands at 2628 megawatts, with Hwange Power Station producing 1099 megawatts and Kariba Hydropower Station generating 215 megawatts. However, the country requires 5000 megawatts to meet its energy demands.

The construction of the 250 megawatts solar power plants is expected to boost the country’s electricity supply, providing a much-needed solution to the current power shortages.
