Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe – The Zambian Minister of Energy Hon Makozo Chikote says “the Zambian government has initiated a series of reforms aimed at revitalizing the country’s energy sector. The reforms are designed to attract private sector investment, enhance energy security, and promote sustainable energy sources.
Historically, the state-owned utility company, ZESCO, has held a near-monopoly over Zambia’s power sector. This dominance has hindered the country’s ability to attract private investment and foster competition. The new reforms seek to address this issue by introducing an open access framework. This framework will allow independent power producers (IPPs) to generate and sell electricity to consumers, creating a more competitive market and driving down prices.
The Zambian government is actively encouraging private sector participation in the energy sector. By creating a conducive environment for investment, the government aims to attract both domestic and foreign investors to develop new power generation projects. This increased private sector involvement is expected to accelerate the country’s energy development and contribute to economic growth.
Zambia’s energy sector reforms also prioritize the adoption of renewable energy sources. The government recognizes the need to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. By promoting solar, wind, and hydro power, Zambia can mitigate climate change and ensure a sustainable energy future.
The implementation of these reforms marks a significant step forward for Zambia’s energy sector. By fostering competition, attracting investment, and promoting renewable energy, the country is well-positioned to achieve its energy goals and drive sustainable economic development”.
