Zim-Zam: Energizing the Future with Grid Expansion, Liberalization, and Security.
Written by Staff Reporter on November 18, 2024
The Zimbabwe-Zambia (Zim-Zam) Energy Projects Summit, held in Victoria Falls, continued with an insightful session on grid expansion, liberalization of the energy sector, and enhancing energy security. High-level representatives, including industry experts, government officials, and private sector leaders, gathered to explore these key topics, which are vital for the sustainable development of both countries.
The session began with a panel discussion on grid expansion. Panelists highlighted the importance of extending the national grid to remote and underserved areas. They discussed various strategies to achieve this, including public-private partnerships, investment in infrastructure, and innovative technologies like smart grids.
The conversation then turned to the liberalization of the energy sector. Experts underscored the need for regulatory reforms to create a more competitive and dynamic energy market. They argued that liberalization would attract private investment, spur innovation, and ultimately lead to lower costs and better services for consumers. Mohamedain Seif Elnasr, Chief Executive Officer of the Regional Association of Energy Regulators for Eastern & Southern Africa said “Let us enhance integration and collaboration to be able to reduce the cost in businesses and fight market competition” he said.
During the session, a key question was raised about the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) and how its work on interconnection is allowing member countries to trade electricity. Executive Director of Southern African Power Pool, Stephen Dihwa explained that SAPP’s interconnection has created a common power grid and market for electricity among its member countries. This interconnection facilitates electricity trade, enhancing energy security and efficiency. “It allows countries to share resources, balance supply and demand, and reduce costs through economies of scale” Mr Dihwa added. By leveraging the diverse energy resources of its members, SAPP ensures a stable and reliable power supply across the region, contributing to sustainable development.
The panel discussion concluded with a consensus on the importance of collaborative efforts to expand the grid, liberalize the energy sector, and enhance security measures. The summit continues, with more updates to follow on subsequent sessions and key outcomes.
