WHO applauds Govt’s efforts to fight cervical cancer

World Health Organisation representative, Dr Bente Mikkelsen, has applauded the Government of Zimbabwe’s efforts in fighting cervical cancer, which has seen over a million women in the country upto date having vaccinated against HPV.

Commenting to media recently in an interview, Dr Mikkelsen said that as a means to eradicate cervical cancer through early detection, there is need for all women to go for cervical Cancer screening to reduce late stage infections which may have life lasting effects on one’s health conditions that may lead to development of other severe cancer traits which may be untreatable.

Minister of Health and child care, Dr Douglas Mombeshora highlighted that the government is currently on course to broaden its efforts to acquire and invest in more radiotherapy equipment, as a way to ensure that women and the girl child get access to efficient and effective cancer treatment programs conducted countrywide.

Meanwhile, as part of its efforts also to combat cervical cancer,Minister Dr Mombeshora, informed that since the inception of the national HPV vaccination program in 2018, over 2 million girls are said to have been vaccinated to date.
