The Victoria Falls City Council convened today in a pivotal meeting, responding to the city’s accreditation from the Conference of Contracting Parties (COP 15), ahead of the highly anticipated RAMSAR COP15 event, set to take place from July 23 to 31, 2025. This landmark event, focusing on wetland conservation, is expected to attract global attention, as the city prepares to host key stakeholders from around the world.

The meeting, held at the City Council Chambers, brought together a diverse group of participants, including Deputy Mayor Lungile Nyoni, representatives from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), councilors, residents, business community members, and various cooperating partners. The primary goal was to raise awareness about the significance of Wetland City Accreditation and to emphasize the critical role that wetlands play in environmental sustainability.

The meeting was structured around several key agenda points, starting with an Overview of the RAMSAR Convention, presented by experts in wetland management and conservation. The convention, an international treaty signed by numerous countries, aims to conserve and protect wetlands globally, with the RAMSAR COP15 conference being a platform for nations to review and strengthen wetland protection policies.

A significant part of the discussions focused on the Wetland City Accreditation, which Victoria Falls has recently achieved, making it one of the few cities in Africa to be recognized for its outstanding efforts in wetland conservation. The accreditation reflects the city’s commitment to preserving its rich biodiversity, ensuring sustainable urban growth, and safeguarding the natural resources that are vital for both local residents and international visitors.

The meeting further highlighted the Importance of Wetland Conservation, explaining how wetlands serve as vital ecosystems for biodiversity, water purification, flood control, and climate change mitigation. Participants were reminded of the invaluable role that wetlands play in supporting livelihoods, particularly for communities relying on the wetland’s resources for agriculture, fishing, and tourism.

A key theme of the meeting was the emphasis on Collaborative Initiatives and Stakeholder Roles. Various stakeholders, including the government, businesses, local communities, environmental organizations, and international partners, were encouraged to work together to ensure the successful conservation of wetlands. It was noted that the upcoming COP15 would provide a platform to showcase the collaborative efforts of the city and strengthen global partnerships in wetland preservation.

One of the most anticipated parts of the gathering was the presentation on the Benefits to the Public from Victoria Falls being accredited as a Wetland City. Beyond the environmental advantages, it was highlighted that the city’s status would bring long-term economic benefits, particularly through eco-tourism, job creation, and enhanced international recognition. The city’s natural beauty, including its proximity to the iconic Victoria Falls, would be further accentuated by its commitment to sustainable development.

The meeting concluded with an Open Discussion, where councilors, residents, and business leaders voiced their opinions and suggestions for improving wetland conservation efforts in the city. Local stakeholders expressed a strong desire to see more educational programs, greater community involvement, and initiatives to ensure that the city’s wetlands are protected for future generations.

Deputy Mayor Lungile Nyoni closed the meeting by reaffirming the city’s commitment to preserving its wetlands and preparing for the successful hosting of the RAMSAR COP15 conference. “This is a significant moment for Victoria Falls. Our accreditation is not just a recognition of our city’s commitment to environmental sustainability, but also a call to action for all of us to play a role in safeguarding our wetlands,” Nyoni said.

With preparations already underway for the COP15 event, the city looks forward to engaging with global leaders, experts, and environmental advocates in 2025, as it continues to lead the way in wetland conservation and sustainable urban development.
