The Vice President of Zimbabwe, Honourable. General (Retd) Dr. Constantino G. D. N. Chiwenga, has extended condolences to the Mphoko family and the nation following the death of former Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko, who passed away in India on Friday.

In a statement, Vice President Chiwenga joined President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa and the people of Matabeleland North Province in mourning the loss of a significant figure in Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle.

Vice President Chiwenga described Mphoko as a “giant of the liberation struggle,” emphasizing that his contributions to the country’s independence are a legacy that will not be forgotten. Chiwenga also highlighted Mphoko’s success as a businessman and farmer, particularly in cattle ranching, showcasing his multifaceted contributions to society.

Mphoko’s involvement in the liberation movement began at a young age, as he was among the first youths to receive military training in the USSR in 1964. He held various key positions, including Chief of Logistics for the Zimbabwe People’s Army (ZIPA) and a member of the Joint Military Command during the liberation war.

After independence, Mphoko served on the Demobilization Board for ex-combatants and held several ambassadorial roles, representing Zimbabwe in countries such as Mozambique, Austria, and South Africa.

He was appointed Vice President in 2014, a role he maintained until 2017, where he focused on national healing and reconciliation efforts.

More details on Mphoko’s funeral arrangements will be advised in due course.
