US to Exit World Health Organization, Cuts Funding

The United States of America is set to exit the World Health Organization (WHO) following President Donald Trump’s signing of an executive order on Monday. The order directs the country to cease funding the UN health body and to withdraw as a member state.

During the signing of several executive orders, Trump criticized the WHO, claiming the US was burdened with “unfairly onerous payments,” while larger countries, such as China, contributed lesser amounts.

Under US law, the order will take effect 12 months from its announcement after being directed to the UN Secretary-General. This gives the US one year to terminate its financial contributions and complete the withdrawal process.

The US has been one of the WHO’s largest contributors, alongside entities like Bill and Melinda Gates, China, Germany, the UK, and other member states. The WHO, a specialized agency of the United Nations, works to improve global public health, combat diseases, and lead on health issues worldwide, with a membership of 194 states.
