Zimbabwean sprinter Methembe Tshuma has successfully undergone surgery after suffering a fractured femur during the African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana.

Zimbabwe Olympic committee confirmed that the operation was carried out at Ghana University Hospital on Monday and doctors indicated the procedure was successful.

Tshuma sustained the injury during the men’s 200m semi-final after falling shortly after leaving the starting blocks. Medical personnel attended to him on the track before he was stretchered off and taken to hospital for further assessment.

Scans later confirmed a broken femur.

According to Zimbabwe Olympic Committee, Tshuma will remain in Accra for several days under post-operative monitoring before doctors clear him to travel back home.

The 200m was one of Tshuma’s key events at the championships. Attention now shifts to his rehabilitation process, although no timeline has yet been provided regarding his return to competition.
