A 34-year-old woman from Tsholotsho has been sentenced to 10 months in prison after being found guilty of throwing her newborn into a Blair toilet and concealing the birth.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the court heard that the woman had kept her pregnancy a secret since March 2024. After giving birth to a baby girl, she disposed of the body in the toilet and later revealed the act to a witness. A post-mortem determined the baby had died due to severe prematurity.

Prosecutors charged the woman under Section 106 (1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform Act), Chapter 9:23, which makes it a crime to conceal the birth of a child. The court imposed the 10-month sentence, sending a strong message about the importance of reporting births and deaths in line with the law.
