South African police have arrested three suspects in connection with the brutal massacre of 18 relatives in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape, following an intensive manhunt.
The arrests were confirmed by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu during a memorial service held for the victims on Sunday.
The killings, which took place last week, sent shockwaves across the nation after gunmen targeted two homes, executing fifteen women and three men, many of whom were shot in the head. The victims ranged in age from 14 to 64 and were gathered for a traditional family ceremony when the attack occurred.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the motive behind the massacre, while Mchunu indicated that a fourth suspect’s arrest is imminent. The three individuals already in custody are set to appear in court on Monday to face charges.
The Lusikisiki massacre has intensified national calls for stronger police protection and swift justice as South Africa grapples with rising violent crime.
