SADC to Withdraw Troops from DRC

Written by on March 14, 2025

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has announced the withdrawal of all military forces from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Speaking during a virtual SADC Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government, SADC Chairperson, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, emphasized that while troops will be pulled out, the regional bloc remains committed to ensuring political security in the DRC.

He expressed gratitude to the countries that deployed troops to assist in the conflict and called for cooperation to ensure a smooth withdrawal process.

The phased withdrawal will facilitate the safe evacuation of military personnel. At least 19 soldiers from South Africa, Malawi, and Tanzania were killed in January when the M23 rebel group captured Goma, the region’s largest city.
