The Southern African Development Community (SADC) recently held a summit to address the ongoing post-election situation in Mozambique.

The virtual extraordinary summit of heads of state and government was chaired by Samia Suluhu Hassan, the chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation, and the President of Tanzania. She emphasized the need for SADC nations to unite and intervene, not only for the benefit of the people of Mozambique but for the broader SADC region.

In a statement, the outgoing chairperson of the Organ and President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, stated that it is crucial to restore peace and security in Mozambique, as the current unrest is obstructing regional trade in energy and transport. He reaffirmed that SADC stands in solidarity with the people of Mozambique and is committed to paving the way for a future of peace and prosperity.

The unrest in Mozambique has resulted in over 200 deaths, with the toll continuing to rise. The summit aimed to develop peaceful resolutions to the ongoing violence in the country.
