Ras BK: The Guitarist with a Message
Written by Staff Reporter on January 21, 2025
In the heart of Mbembeswana, an area called Emarayisini, a young Bekithemba Nkomo, affectionately known as Ras BK, nurtured a passion that would become his life’s purpose. With a guitar always by his side, Ras BK’s journey as a musician began with humble beginnings, mastering three-stringed and four-stringed instruments before encountering his first six-stringed guitar at Inyati High School.
Inspired by the people and experiences surrounding him, Ras BK’s music is a reflection of his own aspirations, feelings, and experiences. He composes and produces his own music, never playing songs by other artists. “You can’t do better than the owner of the song,” he says. This philosophy has guided Ras BK in creating music that is authentic and meaningful.
Ras BK’s creative process is deeply rooted in his observations of life. He believes that everyone has the potential to be creative, but many ideas are lost along the way. His songs are like chapters in a book, each one telling a story that needs to be shared. His album, “Ofileyo ufile,” is a testament to this approach, with ten songs representing ten chapters in the book of life.
One of the standout tracks from the album is the title song, “Ofileyo ufile,” which translates to “Death, the fear of dying.” Ras BK’s message is clear, life is short and precious, hence people need to be told the truth about mortality. He rejects the idea of an afterlife, instead emphasising the importance of living each day to the fullest.
Ras BK’s music has resonated with audiences in various settings. He recalls a memorable performance at MaMkhwananzi Beer Garden, where his music inspired a lively dance session. Another notable performance was at the Entumbane Complex in 2010, where his song “Sokumthatha” moved the audience to tears.
As a seasoned musician, Ras BK has also had the opportunity to teach others how to play the guitar. His approach is encouraging and inclusive, as evident in his statement, “If my daughter Mandisi can do it, why not you?”
Ras BK’s music is a testament to his creativity, passion, and commitment to sharing his message with the world. As he looks to the future, he hopes to collaborate with like-minded artists and continue spreading his message of love, life, and mortality. With his guitar always by his side, Ras BK remains a beacon of hope and inspiration for those who listen to his music.
