President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has officially commissioned new automated grain silos at the Kwekwe Grain Marketing Board (GMB), with a total capacity of 56,000 metric tonnes.
The silos are part of a broader initiative to decentralise food storage facilities and ensure easier access for communities in drought-prone areas, as part of long-term food security efforts.
In his address, President Mnangagwa revealed plans to establish 14 additional silo depots across all rural provinces.
He noted that the establishment of these silos is a direct response to the effects of climate change, including erratic rainfall patterns, droughts, and floods.
By positioning grain reserves closer to vulnerable communities, the government hopes to improve its capacity to respond to food insecurity.
Mnangagwa emphasized that strategic grain reserves enable a quicker and more effective government response to food shortages and emergencies.
