NSSA Urges Employers to Prioritize Workplace Safety Following Crane Accident

The National Social Security Authority (NSSA) has called on employers and employees to prioritize workplace safety after a fatal crane accident at the Trabablas Interchange project site in Harare on 7 January 2025.
The accident claimed the life of one worker and left others injured. NSSA, which derives its occupational safety and health mandate from statutory instruments, has been conducting regular inspections and training at the project site. While areas for improvement were identified, no immediate safety violations were found.
NSSA emphasized the importance of adhering to safety provisions for lifting appliances, including regular inspections by qualified personnel and ensuring equipment stability on uneven surfaces.
The authority also urged employers to notify them of complex construction projects for assistance in enforcing workplace safety. NSSA warned that non-compliance with safety regulations is a punishable offense, with violators facing civil and criminal prosecution.
