NRZ Suspends South East Line After Heavy Rainfall Damage
Written by Staff Reporter on January 17, 2025
The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has suspended operations on its South East line after heavy rains washed away over 480 meters of rail. The Rutenga-Mbizi section lost 360 meters, while 120 meters were destroyed on the Rutenga-Beitbridge line due to overloaded drainage structures.
NRZ noted the affected areas’ vulnerability to such incidents due to their natural topography and below-average rainfall patterns. The current damage is worse than any previously recorded washaways.
Restoration is underway, with 90% of track realignment complete. Quarry fines from Nalatale Quarry Mine in Shangani are being used for repairs. The NRZ expects to reopen the line on Saturday, ensuring safe resumption of operations.
