Finance, Economic Development, and Investment Promotion Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube, has revealed that new taxes introduced in the 2025 National Budget are targeted at strengthening Zimbabwe’s health sector.
Speaking during an online engagement session on 16 January as part of the 2025 World Economic Forum discussions, Prof. Ncube said taxes such as the fast food tax, beverages tax, and sugar tax will play a vital role in funding critical health services. He highlighted that the sugar tax revenue would specifically be used to purchase cancer machines and cancer drugs.
The fast food tax, which applies to items such as tacos, French fries, pizza, burgers, and hot dogs, is also expected to generate significant health sector funding. Similarly, the beverages tax will contribute to financing health programs.
Prof. Ncube is currently in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, attending the 2025 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, where global leaders are addressing critical issues under the theme “Collaboration for the Intelligent Age.” The meeting began on Monday and is set to conclude on Friday.
