The National AIDS Council (NAC) has announced a positive development in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Matabeleland North Province, reporting a decrease in the prevalence rate from 16% in 2024 to 14.4%. This drop marks a significant step towards achieving the national goal of ending AIDS by 2030.
Speaking at the NAC Matabeleland North Provincial Stakeholders Meeting, NAC Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Mr. Mthokozisi Moyo, highlighted that the decline in HIV/AIDS prevalence will have a lasting impact on the country’s efforts to eradicate AIDS by 2030.
Out of the seven districts in the province, Tsholotsho recorded the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rate. NAC Matabeleland North Provincial Manager, Mr. Dingani Ncube, commented on the issue, stating that through the implementation of their model programs, they will intensify efforts to combat and prevent new infections in Tsholotsho.
NAC also credited the steady decline in HIV/AIDS prevalence to condom distribution and promotion, along with sexual reproductive health programs such as Sista to Sista, Brother to Brother, and DREAMS, among others.
