NAC and MMPZ Highlight Challenges in HIV/AIDS Service Access for Young People

Written by on January 24, 2025

The National AIDS Council (NAC) in Bulawayo, in partnership with the Million Memory Project Zimbabwe (MMPZ), has raised concerns over the low uptake of HIV/AIDS services among young people and adolescents. These services are crucial for knowing their HIV statuses and adhering to prescribed treatments.

Speaking in an interview, NAC Provincial Programs Officer Douglas Moyo noted that while the council achieved its 2024 outreach goals of raising HIV/AIDS awareness in communities, engaging young people remains a challenge due to their indifference toward such programs.

Sharing insights on the matter, Mr Fred Madumbu from MMPZ highlighted that many young people struggle to accept their HIV statuses and often fail to adhere to prescribed medications, unlike older generations.

The organizations further reported that adolescents living with HIV/AIDS face challenges such as disclosing their statuses to guardians, experiencing discrimination from peers, and lacking parental support, which hinder their access to necessary care and a supportive environment.
