The Minister of Finance, Economic Development, and Investment Promotion, Professor Mthuli Ncube, has raised alarms over the potential impact of the United States’ withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) on the country’s HIV/AIDS funding.
Minister Ncube emphasized that Zimbabwe receives over $200 million annually from the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), alongside nearly $90 million for healthcare worker salaries and essential HIV services. He expressed concern that this withdrawal could result in cuts to vital health funding, noting that US support has surpassed $1.7 billion since 2006.
In response, the Minister highlighted the government’s introduction of taxes on sugary beverages and fast foods to supplement funding for health initiatives.
