Matemadanda Denounces Mozambique Protests, Attributes Unrest to Looting

Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Mozambique, Victor Matemadanda, has dismissed claims that unrest in Mozambique is tied to protests over the disputed October 9 elections.
Speaking at the recently concluded SADC Extraordinary Summit in Mt. Hampden, Matemadanda clarified that the disturbances reported were acts of looting by organized syndicates targeting supermarkets, not political demonstrations.
He assured that the general atmosphere in Mozambique remains peaceful and rejected allegations that Zimbabweans participated in the elections. Matemadanda noted that since 2004, Mozambicans living abroad, including in Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Portugal, have been eligible to vote in their country’s elections under established regulations.
