Local Organization Addresses Gender-Based Violence Against Women and Girls with Disabilities

The Sign Language Interpreter Trust (SLIT), a local organization, has condemned the alarming prevalence of gender-based violence (GBV) against women and girls with disabilities, drawing attention to the compounded barriers they face in seeking justice and support.
According to Tsungirai Tsugira, Programs Manager at SLIT, women and girls with disabilities are at a significantly higher risk of GBV compared to their able-bodied counterparts. Their plight is often invisible due to societal stigma, inaccessible reporting channels, inadequate support systems, and pervasive communication barriers.
SLIT is addressing these inequities through targeted community outreach, advocacy campaigns, and collaboration with key stakeholders. The organization’s efforts focus on fostering inclusivity and ensuring that women and girls with disabilities have access to the tools, resources, and platforms needed to report abuse and rebuild their lives.
This intervention comes during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign aimed at eradicating GBV in all its forms.
