Australia Approves Social Media Ban for Children under 16 years
Written by Staff Reporter on November 29, 2024
Australia has passed legislation banning children under 16 from using social media, introducing the world’s toughest restrictions on platform access according to reports from BBC.
The law, set to take effect within 12 months, will fine tech companies up to A$50 million ($32.5 million) for non-compliance.
The ban targets platforms like Snapchat, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X. Gaming and messaging apps are excluded, as are sites like YouTube that do not require accounts. The government will rely on age-verification technology, with platforms responsible for implementation.
Critics have raised concerns about privacy, enforcement, and the potential for circumvention using tools like VPNs. The law also faces skepticism about its practicality, as no penalties are planned for children who bypass restrictions.
Despite criticism, the law has gained significant support among Australian parents and caregivers.
