Kariba Power generation increases, but water levels remain critical low
Written by Staff Reporter on January 4, 2025
Power generation at the Kariba Dam has seen a slight increase in recent weeks, reaching 185 MegaWatts (MW) compared to the previous output of 124,5MW. However, this increase is considered temporary as water levels at the dam remain critically low.
Currently, the Hwange Power Station is generating 700MW, while Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are contributing 50MW to the national grid. This brings the total national electricity generation to 935MW countrywide.
It is important to note that Hwange Unit 8, which has a generating capacity of 300MW, is currently undergoing a scheduled Class C maintenance, expected to last for a month.
While the increase in generation at Kariba provides some temporary relief, the need for water conservation measures remains paramount.
