Hippo Deaths in Mid-Zambezi Region Attributed to Malnutrition, Not Anthrax

Written by on January 13, 2025

Investigations by the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) have revealed that the deaths of 19 hippos in the Mid-Zambezi Region were caused by malnutrition, rather than anthrax as initially suspected.

In a recent statement, ZimParks Spokesperson Mr. Tinashe Farawo noted that about 50% of the hippo population in the area shows visible signs of malnutrition or a lack of a balanced diet. The poor body condition of the hippos highlights the urgent need for conservation efforts to ensure the health and well-being of the local wildlife.

The investigation revealed that the hippos had moved 10 km away from the river in search of food, indicating a severe shortage of suitable grazing areas.

ZimParks will continue to monitor the situation, prioritizing the health and welfare of the local wildlife and working to address the underlying issues contributing to habitat degradation and food scarcity.
