The government through the Ministry of Health and Child Care has taken steps to address concerns over healthcare services and medication procurement following U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order, signed on 24 January, which halted foreign aid assistance. The suspension affected several countries, including Zimbabwe, impacting the supply of HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis medications, as well as treatment facilities.
Speaking at a conference, Health Minister Dr. Douglas Mombeshora assured the public that the government is working to prevent service disruptions. He said efforts are underway to procure medication stocks that will last from June to September.
He also stated that the government has reinstated health workers, including nurses and doctors, who had been affected by the aid suspension to ensure continued service delivery.
Other countries heavily reliant on U.S. foreign aid through USAID include South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Somalia.
