Zimbabwe’s First Lady, Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa, has launched the Pangolin Conservation Strategy and Action Plan, a nationwide effort to protect pangolins from poaching and habitat loss.
Dr. Mnangagwa highlighted the cultural and environmental significance of pangolins, stressing that their protection is vital for Zimbabwe’s heritage and biodiversity.
As part of the initiative, the First Lady donated a pregnant pangolin to ZimParks, ensuring it receives proper care and contributes to species survival.
Zimbabwe is home to four pangolin species, the Black-Bellied, White-Bellied, Giant Ground, and Temminck’s Ground Pangolins. However, they remain highly endangered due to poaching, with their scales sought for traditional medicine in China and their meat consumed in parts of the world.
