Dr Joshua Nkomo’s Enduring Legacy Honoured 27 Years On

The Government has paid tribute to national hero and former Vice President Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo, saying his enduring legacy continues to guide Zimbabwe’s quest for unity, peace and national development, 27 years after his passing.
In a statement commemorating the anniversary of his death on July 1, 1999, the Government described Dr Nkomo as a selfless nationalist, visionary leader and liberation icon whose immense contribution to Zimbabwe’s independence and nation-building remains deeply ingrained in the country’s history.
Affectionately known as “Father Zimbabwe”, “Umdala Wethu” and “Chibwe Chitedza”, Dr Nkomo was celebrated for championing the values of peace, reconciliation, hard work, integrity and national cohesion throughout his distinguished life.
The Government highlighted his pivotal role as a co-architect of the historic Unity Accord of December 22, 1987, noting that the agreement helped lay the foundation for lasting peace, political stability and national unity in Zimbabwe.
Recognised as one of the country’s foremost liberation leaders, Dr Nkomo remains a symbol of resilience, patriotism and statesmanship. His commitment to fostering reconciliation and building a united nation continues to inspire present and future generations.
Twenty-seven years after his death, the Government said Dr Nkomo’s vision and ideals remain a guiding force in Zimbabwe’s ongoing journey towards unity, prosperity and inclusive national development.
