The Deputy Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Honourable Tongai Mnangagwa, hosted Emanuel Akot today , a passionate Pan-Africanist from Uganda, on a tour of the iconic Victoria Falls. During the visit, Minister Mnangagwa announced Akot’s appointment as Zimbabwe’s tourism ambassador.
“Going forward, he is going to be Zimbabwe’s ambassador,” declared the minister, highlighting Akot’s unwavering advocacy for Zimbabwe. “We have been following Akot as a ministry and realized he speaks a lot about Zimbabwe. Hence, we decided to bring him here to experience our country firsthand and officially represent Zimbabwe as a tourism ambassador.”
Minister Mnangagwa emphasized Akot’s role in fostering African unity and cooperation. “Emanuel Akot is a young, passionate voice for Pan-African unity, and we believe working with him aligns with our vision for a more connected and prosperous continent,” he stated.
Taurai Kandishaya, the newly elected Chairperson of the African Youth Congress, underscored the significance of Akot’s appointment in reshaping Zimbabwe’s global narrative. He noted that having an ambassador who is unaffiliated with any political ideology would help counter misconceptions about Zimbabwe. “Akot’s visit allows us to present Zimbabwe’s true story from a neutral perspective, showcasing the resilience of its people despite the sanctions imposed two decades ago.
Zimbabwe remains a safe and secure destination for tourists,” Kandishaya affirmed.
Kandishaya also revealed his plans to use his new role to bring more young people to Zimbabwe, actively inviting students and researchers from across Africa to experience the country firsthand. “We want young people to come here, see Zimbabwe for themselves, and gain their own perspective rather than rely on misleading narratives,” he explained.
He further highlighted that many visitors are surprised by the stark contrast between Zimbabwe’s reality and its portrayal online. “Visitors from Botswana and Zambia said that the Zimbabwe on social media and the one on the ground are different because Zimbabwe’s image on social media is distorted,” he shared.
Minister Mnangagwa also highlighted the success of previous tourism ambassadors in boosting visitor numbers. “Our last ambassador left a strong marketing platform, leading to an 83% increase in tourist arrivals in 2024. Today’s marketing landscape has evolved, with social media playing a crucial role in promoting destinations. We are leveraging these digital platforms to showcase Zimbabwe’s beauty to the world.”
As Emanuel Akot takes on his new role, his dedication to Pan-Africanism and his commitment to unity will undoubtedly contribute to Zimbabwe’s growing reputation as a premier travel destination.
