Councillor Sounds Alarm on Backyard Wells Amid Prolonged Water Outages

Written by on August 15, 2024

In a bid to safeguard public health and safety, Councillor Ntandoyenkosi Ndlovu of Ward 28 has issued a stern warning to residents against digging wells in their yards.

The caution comes as prolonged water outages, spanning up to 120 hours, have driven some residents to seek alternative sources of water.

Councillor Ndlovu stressed that backyard wells pose significant risks, including contaminated water and life-threatening hazards, particularly for children.

Residents who have already dug wells are advised to cover them immediately to prevent accidents and refrain from consuming the water due to potential contamination from sewage and other sources.

In lieu of wells, the councillor assured residents that the local council is committed to providing clean, potable water through taps. During outages, water will be distributed via bowsers, with priority given to areas surrounding the Ema4 water kiosk and Mkhithika Thebe School.

Ndlovu said the council is actively working to upgrade water infrastructure and ensure consistent access to safe drinking water for all residents.
