The Common Market for East and Southern Africa (COMESA) Consumer Protection Committee wrapped up a crucial two-day conference in Port Louis, Mauritius, coinciding with World Consumer Rights Day.
Led by Chairperson Mrs. Rose Mpofu, the committee addressed pressing consumer issues arising from the digital age and the drive for sustainability. From March 14th to 15th, delegates focused on the increasing challenges faced by consumers in the region.
The committee conducted discussions centered on the rise of fraud on e-commerce platforms, manipulative “dark patterns” in online interfaces, and deceptive “greenwashing” marketing tactics. Protecting vulnerable consumers and navigating the impact of artificial intelligence on consumer rights were also critical topics.
The conference’s conclusion aligned with the global observance of World Consumer Rights Day, celebrated annually on March 15th. This year’s theme, “A Just Transition to Sustainable Lifestyles,” underscored the need for ethical consumerism and sustainable market practices.
The COMESA committee, alongside Zimbabwe’s Consumer Protection Commission, emphasized the importance of promoting fair, safe, and environmentally conscious marketplaces.
