Boosting Rural Electrification

Written by on November 19, 2024

The Zimbabwe-Zambia Energy Summit continued on the 19th of November 2024 in Victoria Falls, with the second day’s discussions focusing on innovative projects, procurement strategies, and sector priorities during the Projects Workshop.

Zimbabwe’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA) is spearheading a series of ambitious rural solar mini-grid projects valued at USD 20 million. These initiatives are set to revolutionize remote communities by providing clean, reliable electricity, fostering economic growth, and improving the quality of life for residents.

Felister Makumbinde, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the REA, presented on the Rural Energy Master Plan. The rural solar mini-grid projects, financed through a combination of debt and grants, are set to receive USD 14 million in grants. Makumbinde revealed that “the projects are expected to reach financial closure by the first quarter of 2025, with a construction timeline of approximately 6 to 9 months.”

One notable example is the 200kW solar mini-grid in Hakwata village, Chipinge District, commissioned in October 2024. Valued at nearly USD 2 million, this project powers over 100 homes, businesses, a school, a clinic, and community boreholes. It is part of the Climate Adaptation Water Energy Programme (CAWEP), a collaboration between the British Government, the Government of Zimbabwe, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Another impactful project is the Sustainable Energy for Rural Communities (SE4RC), also known as the Mashaba Solar Mini-grid project. This initiative aims to provide over 160kW of solar energy to power irrigation schemes, business centers, a clinic, a school, and a study center in Gwanda South. The project is funded by the European Union, the OPEC Fund for International Development, and the Global Environmental Facility, and is implemented by SNV, Practical Action, and Dabane Trust.

As Zimbabwe continues to prioritize sustainable energy solutions, these rural electrification projects represent a monumental step towards a brighter future for its rural communities.
