Zimbabwe, Zambia Champion Stronger Border Governance at African Border Day Commemorations

Zimbabwe and Zambia yesterday jointly hosted the 2026 African Border Day commemorations in Kariba, bringing together policymakers, diplomats and border management experts to advance regional cooperation and strengthen border governance across the continent.

The high-level event attracted about 150 delegates from various African countries, including government officials, diplomatic representatives, border management practitioners and members of border communities.

Delegates deliberated on strategies to enhance cross-border collaboration, improve border management systems and promote sustainable development in line with the objectives of the African Union Border Programme.

The commemorations served as an important platform for African nations to exchange experiences, share best practices and explore practical solutions to emerging challenges affecting border governance and regional integration.

This year’s commemorations were held under the African Union theme, “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” highlighting the importance of cooperation in the management of shared water resources and the promotion of sustainable development across borders.

African Border Day is observed annually on June 7 following its adoption by the African Union in 2010 to promote peaceful borders, regional integration and enhanced cooperation among member states.
