President Mnangagwa Calls on Zimbabweans to Embrace Heroes’ Legacy of Service

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has urged Zimbabweans to emulate the patriotism, dedication and selfless service demonstrated by the nation’s heroes, saying their values remain essential to building a prosperous and united Zimbabwe.

Speaking at the burial of National Hero Major General (Retired) Richard Ruwodo at the National Heroes Acre today, President Mnangagwa paid tribute to the late liberation war veteran and military leader, as well as National Hero Professor Herbert Mapfumo Chinyanga, describing them as distinguished sons of Zimbabwe whose contributions left a lasting imprint on the country’s development.

The President said the future of Zimbabwe rests on a new generation that is committed to national service, innovation and transforming knowledge into practical solutions that advance the country’s Vision 2030 development agenda.

He commended Major General Ruwodo for his dedicated service during the liberation struggle and his instrumental role in the growth, professionalisation and modernisation of the Zimbabwe National Army in the years following Independence.

President Mnangagwa said the lives of the two national heroes stand as a powerful reminder that nation-building requires sacrifice, discipline and unwavering commitment to the collective good.

Major General Ruwodo passed away on July 7 at the age of 72 and was honoured for a lifetime of service to Zimbabwe both during and after the country’s fight for independence.
